Brandi Heartt is a sexy late-night DJ in Los Angeles. Her scintillating, breathy
voice and naughty words captivate a city famous for its wanton residents. Brandi's
brash persona is a far cry from the scared little girl who left Georgia at 14
after an unspeakable tragedy. Although settled in her L.A. gig, Brandi still
has demons to contend with-her Uncle Ralph's abuse still haunts her, and the
scenario repeats itself in the person of manager Barry Schorr whose cruel advances
force Brandi to leave Los Angeles and her comfortable, high-profile job. Coy
Grentelle is the slow-witted janitor at station WSCX in Savannah. He instantly
falls in love with Brandi upon her arrival as the new DJ in town. He secretly
lusts for her, but his handicap and checkered past prevent him from taking action.
Together, Coy and Brandi are an odd couple as Brandi's cold exterior and Coy's
personality impede their progress until Coy takes a final, irrevocable step.
Although Coy manages to bring them closer together, many other people in Savannah
have different plans for them, including the fine, clean-living ladies of the
city, who find Brandi's show evil and an affront to morality, and Calvin Little,
the city manager, who has secrets of his own.
Audrey Godwin has written an action-packed roller coaster ride of a book. It's
a fast read despite being novel-length, as the descriptions are terse but appropriate,
and the dialogue reveals characters motives instead of drawn-out prose. A few
scenes of graphic violence may be a bit much for more squeamish readers. Overall,
an excellent book from one of the genre's rising authors. "Midnight Mistress"
is another winning entry from Audrey Godwin, who has penned novels for eXtasy
Books and New Concepts Publishing as well as Renaissance E-Books.
