New Orleans is gone. Washed away forever. Sure, they'll rebuild, but it will never be the same. I lived in the French Quarter and Marigny in 1995. Let's just say it was the most "interesting" year of my life, my own personal version of "A Confederacy of Dunces." New Orleans was a unique, vibrant city, despite its poverty and all its other problems. All of the people I knew in New Orleans moved to other places long before Katrina, except for one friend who fled the storm and is now safe in Lafayette.
Please donate to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army or any other reputable organization. As for the TV coverage, the looters, and all the political bickering about what could or could not have been prevented, Foamy the Squirrel speaks for us in his "live report" --

Did you hear that C.C. Deville of Poison was arrested for allegedly hitting his girlfriend? The details are on metalsludge.tv.. C.C. is another one of those people who can never quite get his act together...ok who put me on the mailing list for "Times Square Hunks", a Chippendales type outfit in NYC? Or does this go out automatically to all female romance writers?
I finally have a banner for my website (check the home page, under the Yahoo group button.) Simple and to the point...thanks to Des for designing it.

Re: what shall I do on Monday the 22nd?
thank you. that is the correct answer. I was toying with the Ashlee Simpson thing, thinking that I could visit the "heart of darkness" for once and write about it in an article, but then I'd have to sit there and watch the movie..cute slutty guys are much more interesting..
love ya,

The Screen Doors-er, sorry, Doors of the 21st Century or whatever they're called this week, recently played a show at St. Rita High School on Chicago's Southwest side. Now see, if I'd known about this, I could have arranged an early show for 'em at the Moose Lodge at 83rd and Pulaski...

Sunday night we're on the way home from the Devo concert (More on that tomorrow) and I'm wearing my "Energy Dome." A cab driver pulls up beside us. Totally perplexed, he goes "Is that a pot on your head?"

Why Reality Shows Are Here To Stay (Or Andy Warhol Didn't Know How Right He Was)
After recently discovering a documentary/interview show I've been working on was rechristened as a "reality" show, I came to a sad and shocking realization.
We may as well forget about well-written, legitimately scripted drama and comedy on television. Reality shows are not a passing fad. They are a sympton of an arrogant and self-absorbed society. Anyone and everyone can be a star & try to stretch out their 15 minutes of fame as long as possible. Now, really, do you think the dissatisfied cocktail waitresses, blackjack dealers and car salesman out there are ready to forego their one chance at rubbing elbows with Paris Hilton and Star Jones? Not on your life. So stop asking when this fad will end...we're stuck with it.
On a more positive entertainment note, saw a few great young bands the other night. Rock N Roll Soldiers, the Vacation, La Rocca & Dirty Sweet played the Knitting Factory. There may be hope for the youth of America, after all...

Got back from NYC a few days ago, and I had a smashing time! God, I miss that place. I wasn't sure how I'd react after 5 1/2 years away, but I loved it. Can't wait to go back. Did some of the same things I did when I lived there-took the infamous #7 train from Flushing to Midtown (in 95 degree heat, no less), spent $$ at a street fair in Soho, shopped at ole haunts like Joyce Leslie & Sanrio. Even went to Roosevelt Field Mall in L.I.! Of course, there were cops everywhere, checking backpacks at the subway entrance and watching over the street fair. Went to ground zero and St. Paul's Chapel on Monday. The enormity of it doesn't really hit you until you're right there standing in front of it. Pictures don't do it justice. It's amazing what hatred can do.
Back to life in L.A.--

I'm sitting here watching the local Hollywood 4th of July fireworks cascade in the sky like silver glitter. Very lovely, and quite a contrast to the way the day began. Yes, I don't call it the slums off Hollywood Blvd. for nothing. Today's news- another car got broken into, more homeless guys are setting up sleeping quarters in the "gangway" between apt. buildings, & abandoned bags of crack are left in plain sight on the sidewalk. (Ya know, this neighborhood was much worse in 1983 when I first moved here. That's NOT a joke.)
Went to the Billy Idol show at the Wiltern Saturday night. Awesome show. He did all the MTV hits ('cept for "Cradle of Love"), Steve Stevens smoked on guitar and, umm, did I ever mention Billy has a perfectly gorgeous chest? Especially when the sweat is dripping down..oh, sorry, there I go again. I'm sure some of the horny suburban housewives in attendance gave their hubbies quite a workout when they got home.

There's a great article in the Village Voice this week about writing erotica. It's author, Rachel Kramer Bussel, has recently edited an anthology of spanking fiction.

Fan killed at Corrosion of Conformity concert in Florida. I had to search like mad to find confirmation on this story. It's like this type of violence at metal shows is no big deal anymore. Very scary.

Was at the "New York Doll" screening at the L.A. Film Fest a few days ago. Great documentary-I liked how it focused on the positive aspects of the Dolls getting back together and Arthur Kane joining the Mormon Church, not all the deaths and drug stuff. Interviewees included Sir Bob Geldof, Chrissie Hynde, Leee Black Childers, Iggy Pop, journalist Nina Antonia, etc. Morrissey was there at the screening along with his manager and some industry types, but was whisked out w/o fraternizing with the attendees. When I took my seat I looked a few rows in front of me and I saw a short guy with perfectly coiffed salt and pepper hair. Even though I only saw the back of his head, I knew it was Morrissey. It's funny. It takes me 10 minutes to recognize celebrities like Winona Ryder when I'm at the same backstage party with 'em but I see the back of Morrissey's head and instantly I know it's him. (Damn, he's handsome!! Sorry, had to engage in a girlie moment... )The director spoke for a few minutes after the screening. Apparently, he went to church with Arthur and that's how they met. Later in the evening I saw the Futureheads at the Henry Fonda, a good new band from England. At least their songs aren't all whiny like a lot of their peers. They really rocked..

This is one nightmare that may never end. It's "past the point of ridiculousness" as my friend Tony used to say. From the Radio & Internet newsletter I received today:
"The producers of the hit Fox television show "American Idol" have
announced that they're taking the contest online in fall.
13 channels of Internet radio on the "American Idol Underground"
website will feature contestants' music. Listeners can vote and nominate artists for a final judging to be done by a panel (much like on the TV show)."

I'm sitting here staring at the radio in utter astonishment cuz Dickie Barrett just played "Belly Of the Whale" by Burning Sensations AND THEN he played "Lucky Number" by Lene Lovich. Just when I thought Indie couldn't spring anymore musical surprises on me..
Speaking of surprises, whaddaya think about the series finale for "Lost?" The scene where Walt was taken away by the people on the boat was downright scary-and what's the deal with the Monster? It sounds like some antiquated roller coaster.
