Press release for "Broken Rose":

Also, because I am desperate for money I answered a dopey ad for freelancers on Craigslist. The fellow in question (in L.A., of course) demanded people make long-distance phone calls to other people who had answered the ad, interview them, write copy and e-mail it to him before the end of the holiday weekend. Needless to say, the complaints from freelancers poured in. It's funny-I find that the major publishers, magazines and literary agents treat all writers with respect and courtesy. Hey, they'll at least get back to you in a timely manner with a rejection! But proprietors of small and start-up websites and the like are snooty and treat potential writers like dirt. If that's their M.O, they won't last very long. And when did people decide that writing is not a skill and writers should not be paid for their work? Someone told me a few months ago that the most common "rate" for freelancers is "exposure and a byline." Is freelance writing as a career-even a part-time one-a thing of the past?

A few months back the Alarm hired a pretty young band to lip synch their song in a video under the name "The Poppyfields." The song became a hit, & now the whole scam is being made into a film. Marketing genius.

Look what I found! A website dedicated to Skafish, a very weird, androgynous Chicago punk rocker from the late '70s--early '80s. His band opened for Iggy Pop in '78 or '79.His cousin was Bobby Skafish the WXRT DJ. Sex Pistols trivia- Sid saw Skafish play in NY and took a fancy to his female drum roadie,Tara. Tara's boyfriend at the time, Todd Smith (Patti's brother) didn't take kindlt to this & Sid hit him with a bottle.... "Disgracing The Family Name" was their best known song. Ya know, it was bad enough to act/look like Skafish in 1977 if you lived in New York or L.A. But in Chicago!! I loved him, needless to say..

I just posted a review of "Has Been" the William Shatner/Ben Folds CD on the Non-Fiction page.
There's a website and weekly e-mail newsletter for writers called "Writer's Weekly", a really good source for freelance assignments. Angela Hoy, who runs the site, is very adamant about writers being paid for their work. In days of yore, most freelance journalists could count on finding a few paying (i.e. cash money) assignments every so often. Now most of the markets tempt potential writers with "You get free concert tickets and you can see your name in print." And a lot of people fall for that. It's one thing to write for a non-paying website you admire (I write for a few & don't mind it because its good PR & I'm treated well), or for a friend, etc., but writing for unprofessional people is a no-no. Once in awhile I used to do that. As fate would have it, I succumbed to a non-paying assignment at the last minute and you know what happened. There was no pass for me at the press desk, the publisher said he'd send an e-mail with editorial instructions (twice he said he'd do this) and of course he never sent it. And he doesn't call with instructions about today's non-paying assignment until 2 hours before it's supposed to take place. Now last night I get called for a $50 an hour writing assignment that has to be finished this weekend. I think I'm going for that. It's like a writer friend of mine said to me the other day "I only work with people who treat me with respect."
And that should be every writer's credo..

Well, I've had a rollicking weekend so far-working on press releases!!! Hey as long as they pay me... Just sent in the contract for my "Broken Rose" erotic poetry book (Renaissance E-Books), and my friends are threatening to clandestinely e-mail certain book submissions I refuse to send. I think I'm procrastinating because I'm an "erotica" writer, not an "erotic romance" writer (at least not in the "every hero must be an Alpha male vampire & the heroine falls in love with him after he ties her up" sense.) I mean, I love Alpha males, but not in every story!! I prefer "Secretary." That to me is the ultimate BDSM story. The real deal.
I've been cheating on Indie1031 the past week...with
http://www.oldies540.com/
They played "She's A Heartbreaker" by Gene Pitney. I'm still in shock! Scott Shannon is the primary DJ on the station & they a really good selection of oldies from the 50s to the late 60s... I added a pic section to the Jonesy's Jukebox page. There are only 2 pics up there for now but I'll add more in the days T/K..

I got word a few days ago that a friend of mine died from Hepatitis C. He was a intravenous drug user for many years. When I met him, he seemed to be getting his life together, but sadly, he descended into drug use again. Too many of my New York punk rock acquaintances have passed away from drug use and/or alcoholism...

Oh! The horror! I was without a computer monitor for a week and had to use Troy's computer. Now I'm back on my own trusty 4 year old rustheap with a used monitor for the time being. Being w/o my own computer for a week made me realize-I sure do spend a LOT of time surfing the Net when I should be working. I felt guilty about that for awhile, and decided to go on a 9am to 6pm schedule just like in an office-points off for netsurfing or goofing off on the job.
Site Updates
The Jonesy's Jukebox page has now been updated through today 11/1.
I'll be adding new stories to the erotica section this weekend.

Oh, it's so beautiful and crisp today! I wish I could just sit by the ocean all day, but alas I'm stuck here writing about computers and IT and women in business and all that stuff. Going to the Ben Folds/William Shatner concert tonight.

Yesterday I happened to be flipping channels on the telly while waiting for the 5 p.m. news and I caught the first few minutes of "Dr.Phil." YEE GADS!! Where do they get these people! They had some dopey couple on-a wimpy guy and his self-absorbed, superficial wife who ended her first marriage because it wasn't "lucrative" enough. So the guy goes broke courting her, they get married, have a baby, and the ditzy broad complains that there's no money for her manicures and massages. Exxxcuse me! Shouldn't you be concerned with providing a better life for your newborn daughter instead!! Sheesh! Oh, while I'm on a "What the hell is wrong with people" rant, here's a new one involving drivers futzing around instead of actually paying attention. A few days ago, Troy sees some woman typing on her laptop computer while driving. No, she wasn't stopped in traffic-the car was actually moving. I swear, Southern California is one big, ongoing version of "Death Race 2000." I can't wait til there's some 100 car pile-up on the 101 cuz someone in an SUV was on the cell phone, drinking a latte AND sending an e-mail when they should have been paying attention to traffic!

I am SO behind on my writing, and not cuz of my personal life or the new business writing assgn. Ya know, I just wanted a dopey PT job to bring a few bucks in while waiting for freelance money. Instead, I got a phone sales job with a revolving door policy on employees-er-sorry "trainees" complete with constant monitoring, quality reassurance via a drill sergeant, and sales technique lectures every other day. *Sigh* Well, you never know about a new job til you get there....It's back to the bookstore for a pt gig.
***COURTNEY'S KITTY RADIO TONIGHT***
Only caught the second hour. Played the Distillers, Le Tigre, Icarus Line, etc. Spilled perfume over panties that she just bought, flirted with that Indie announcer dude again, and said "There's no room for Gwen Stefani in Courtney's world."

Today I got hired for a SERIOUS writing job by a real company-one that can actually pay me-with MONEY!! Miracles do happen!! This doesn't mean I'm abandoning my erotica/poetry/heavy metal reviews, it just means I'll have less time to piddle around obscure websites and gossip about famous people...SPEAKING OF WHICH, Courtney Love hosted "Kitty Radio" tonight on Indie1031. "I was a crazy nutbag," she says of the sorry episodes that lead to her new-found sobriety. Referred to herself as "Mrs. Cat", says there's a "Mr. Cat" but did not reveal his identity. Expressed her admiration for the Icarus Line (of buddyhead.com fame) cuz "they're bad boys." Unfortunately, she "can't be bad anymore." Talked a lot about Henry Rollins "font" (in his books, that is.) and flirted with the Scott, the stoner sounding dude who does station IDs for Indie. Would not reveal any celebrity gossip except "Matt Sorum likes girls and they have to be young and I'm not saying anymore."

Why are large office buildings set up in such in a confusing and haphazard manner? Why isn't Suite 101 next to Suite 102? That would be too simple. Yesterday I visited such an office building (I now have a part-time cubicle job, by the way) and it was like Spinal Tap trying to get to the stage door. Geez! Or maybe it's just me-let's face it, I haven't worked in a corporate office building since 2000.
Quote of the Day (via e-mail)
